Welcome to Michael Hartl's home on the web! I'm a theoretical physicist and technology entrepreneur. You might know me as the founder of Tau Day, author of The Tau Manifesto, creator of the Ruby on Rails tutorial, or cofounder and principal author of Learn Enough, which was acquired in 2022. Currently, I'm working on a mathematics learning project. You can find more information about my current projects on my Substack and /now pages. I've authored over a dozen books, including Learn Enough Python to Be Dangerous and The Ruby on Rails Tutorial, which were published jointly with Learn Enough (online courses) and Pearson Education (print, ebook, and video editions). After the acquisition of Learn Enough and completion of the final tutorial, I focused on reconnecting with my physics roots by starting a systematic course in mathematics. Follow Michael Hartl on Substack and Twitter for more updates.I am a graduate of Harvard University (A.B. in Physics) and Caltech (Ph.D. in Physics), as well as a participant in the Y Combinator program (with a now-defunct company). During my time as a graduate student and postdoctoral researcher at Caltech, I focused on the study of black hole dynamics, and I served as an instructor in both theoretical and computational physics. For my efforts, I received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching. At the request of Kip Thorne, I was also involved in an update to the Feynman Lectures on Physics, serving as Caltech's editor. You can read more about this project here. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have interests in old books, natural and computer languages, nutrition, physical fitness, singing, and martial arts. I hold a black belt in self-defense and have experience in various martial arts, including MMA, BJJ, and Krav Maga.
